Edition 5 – VC soft power, starting a newsletter and behind the scenes of India’s most iconic consumer brand

Why do we need another marketing newsletter? Honestly, we can’t think of a reason, except for one: we’re marketing buffs. As marketers, we’re constantly inundated with information—another podcast, book, tweet, or newsletter to catch up on.

BRANDy is our effort to bring some method to madness. No gyaan, no controversial POVs, no gossip—just a collection of interesting things that caught our eye in the world of marketing.

Think of it as a marketing bookmark.

Here’s a quick round-up of things that caught our eye from the world of brands and marketing.

a) A VC Speaks on Personal Branding

Sajith Pai is one of India’s most recognized VCs. For someone who started his VC career at 43, that’s quite an achievement. In a profession that gained prominence after the startup boom, understanding how the world of VC works is fascinating. This tweet contains a couple of excerpts from a piece on how VCs build their soft power. See the tweet here.

b) Work humiliates you

Legendary screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar makes a poignant point. He says even veteran and accomplished writers sometimes look at their first drafts and feel somewhat disgusted. But the more you practice, the better you get. In that sense, work humiliates you. Until eventually, the tide turns and you become a good writer. Unfortunately, not everyone sticks with it to become good. It’s good advice to follow for any endeavour. Watch it here.

c) Why brands suck at storytelling

While there is plenty of content on how to tell good stories, why do brands still fail at it? This piece explains why, and hopefully, you’ll be able to avoid the same pitfalls. Read more here.

d) Newsletter Dilemma

BRANDy is a few editions old and still fledgling. Newsletters seem to be on every content planner’s list. Some do well, some go the distance. This piece offers great takeaways on starting a newsletter. More than that, the advice can be applied to your marketing plan as well. Read more here.

e) Book recommendation –The Titan Story by Vinay Kamath

According to the late Xerxes Desai (the founder of Titan), the company was founded by sheer serendipity. The book delves into the beginnings of India’s most successful consumer brand. From their first-ever ad to their misadventures in Europe, from Mozart becoming a mainstay in their advertising to branching out into Fastrack and Taneira, the book makes for a fascinating read. One feels it could have been a little longer! 🙂
